Well, in the process of recreating my old site layout - which I liked and wanted to mostly re-use - I discovered that some of the things I want to do can't be done with a Blogger classic template. Some of the newer features only work with the new layout designs. So I guess I'm going to scrap this still-mostly-empty design and start over with a Blogger "layout". It'll probably look quite different at first, and will probably be changing a lot as I figure out what I'm doing. So please bear with me for a bit as things change!
